Stephan Conter Interview

Stephex is a world-leading showjumping, trading, and breeding stable producing some of today’s most successful showjumping horses. For the past 11 years Olympic rider Daniel Deusser has built his career at Stephex stables alongside his colleagues Kendra Claricia Brinkop, Michael Hughes, Petronella Andersson, and the Conter sisters. Since its founding date in 1986, the Stephex Stables has grown to obtain several successful sister companies, such as the Stephex Horsetrucks, STX Motorhomes, Stephex Events, STX Finance, and STX Vans. To learn more about the principles behind this success story, we had the chance to sit down together with Stephan Conter, the CEO and founder of the Stephex Group.

How was your passion for horses born?

These captivating animals have a special power. I, like many others, have not been able to get enough of the sport. At 9 years old I sat on a horse for the first time. Before I knew it, I was showing in children’s shows. Thereafter my passion for horses and this sport has only grown.

What led you to establish this renowned stable?

Ever since I was young, I have always been ambitious. I had this “Folie des grandeurs” mentality (which translates to the madness of greatness). In 1986 I decided to combine my passion for horses with my business-driven mentality. Throughout the years I have landed some great opportunities, taken some risks, and met some incredible people that have made Stephex what it is today.

What qualities do you look for in a horse when selecting them for your stable?

I primarily work with horses born in Belgium, these are some of the best show jumpers in the world. I always look for their intelligence, carefulness, and their will to collaborate. The horses at Stephex need to have the right mentality to make the best partnership with the rider. Ultimately, this is a team sport. Both parties need to work in synergy.

On what basis do you distribute the horses for the riders?

I pay attention to talent and passion when I select the riders, they need to be determined, dedicated and ambitious; I am primarily going based on my feelings. I try to seek the best fit for both the horse and the rider. Sometimes I make a mismatch, but then we simply exchange the horses. All riders at Stephex are different. We always find a match.

How did you come up with the idea of the Stephex Masters?

It was an idea from my team at Stephex. I was focused on building a show outside of our home grounds. However, due to permit issues, we couldn’t make that a reality. The idea of the Brussels Stephex Masters was then presented. I won’t deny it: I was doubtful at the start. Boy, was I proven wrong. I quickly realized I owe a big thank you to my team for pushing me. The Brussels Stephex Masters has proven to be a fantastic experience year after year. Next year? We will keep that as a surprise.
